Alfred Stieglitz (1864-1946) is one of the most important and influential photographers of the 20th century. He advocated what is now called straight photography or "pure photography", a vision of photography as a "modern" artistic discipline "in its own right", distinguishing itself from painting. He was also a key figure in the New York Modernist movement of the 1900s and, through his galleries and publications, played a major role in the development of both American photography and art.
