Keyzer, Carl De - God Inc. rare!

In the summer of 1990 Carl De Keyzer accompanied by his wife and three-year-old son takes the plane to Los Angeles, California. There he buys a camping car - which will be his home for a year - and immediately heads for the northern states, before winter sets in. He has only one subject on his agenda: religious groups. The United States is a breeding ground for about 3700 different religious groups. Religion is an essential part of the American wary of life, if only because of the particular attention given to it by movie stars, pop artists, politicians, and the media. Churches are not subsidized in the US but they are exempted from taxes. Otherwise, they have to be fully self-supporting. Most churches are doing well, very well. It appears that God as a product is the gap in the American market of the 90s; hence, God Incorporated.

Carl De Keyzer (Kortrijk, December 27, 1958) is a Belgian photographer. He studied photography at the Academy of Ghent. Since 1994 he has been a member of the photo collective Magnum.

In de zomer van 1990 neemt Carl De Keyzer samen met zijn vrouw en driejarige zoon het vliegtuig naar Los Angeles, Californië. Daar koopt hij een kampeerauto - die hij een jaar lang zijn thuis zal zijn - en vertrekt meteen voor de winter naar de noordelijke staten. Hij heeft maar één onderwerp op zijn agenda: religieuze groeperingen. De Verenigde Staten zijn een broedplaats voor ongeveer 3700 verschillende religieuze groepen. Religie is een essentieel onderdeel van de Amerikaanse behoedzaamheid voor het leven, al was het maar vanwege de bijzondere aandacht die filmsterren, popartiesten, politici en de media eraan besteden. Kerken worden in de VS niet gesubsidieerd, maar zijn vrijgesteld van belastingen. Anders moeten ze volledig zelfvoorzienend zijn. De meeste kerken doen het goed, heel goed. Het lijkt erop dat God als product de kloof is in de Amerikaanse markt van de jaren 90; vandaar God Incorporated.

Carl De Keyzer (Kortrijk, 27 december 1958) is een Belgisch fotograaf. Hij studeerde fotografie aan de Academie van Gent. Sinds 1994 is hij lid van het fotocollectief Magnum.
